Stavros Spiliopoulos is a Professor of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Head of the Interventional Radiology Division of the 2nd Department of Radiology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Medicine, Attikon University General Hospital, Greece. He is also the Director of the Interventional Radiology and Oncology Clinic of the Athens Medical Center, Athens, Greece.
A holder of the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) since 2011, he also maintains specialized certifications in Endovascular and Interventional Oncology (EBIR-ES and EBIR-IO).
Prof. Spiliopoulos has published more than 240 peer-reviewed PubMed articles (h factor: 35; Scopus citations: ~ 6.000) and is a reviewer in >20 scientific PubMed journals (performed >500 reviews). Dr Spiliopoulos has also published 20 international book chapters and has given over 300 invited lectures in National and International Congresses.
He is an elected Treasurer of the Board of the Greek Society of Interventional Radiology, elected member of the Standards of Research Committees of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Society of Europe (CIRSE), and Member of the AI and Robotics Sub-committee of the European Society of Radiology (ESR). He has served as a past President of the Vascular Sub-committee of ESR and past elected member of the Standards of Practice and Research Committees of CIRSE. He is an Associate Editor in 3 PubMed scientific journals, and a member of the Editorial Board of 6 International peer review Journals. Prof. Spiliopoulos has received over 35 International and National Awards and Distinctions for his research in the field of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology.
Prof. Spiliopoulos has a long-standing experience in teaching Radiology and Interventional Radiology in undergraduate and post-graduate students, in various National Universities, as well as in the UK. He is the Supervisor of Ph.D. and MSc. students. He is also supervising and teaching Interventional Radiology procedures in National, European and overseas, clinical fellows and specialist registrars and is a Hands-on Instructor in vascular and non–vascular interventions training courses. He is also organizing and performing various clinical and experimental investigational protocols and is participating in several multicenter, European and Global studies.
He has received over 35 Awards and distinctions for his research in the field of Interventional Radiology and Radiology. His main ongoing research interests are endovascular management of peripheral arterial disease (drug-elution, antiplatelet therapy, metabolic assessment of ischemic tissue), endovascular procedures for dialysis vascular access and loco-regional treatments of solid organ malignancies (hepatocellular carcinoma, liver metastasis, renal malignancies).
