Matthew Popplewell

academic vascular surgeon

Matt is an academic vascular surgeon with an interest in clinical research. His clinical interests are in limb salvage for patients with CLTI using both open and endovascular approaches.

Matt is a clinical academic working at the University of Birmingham and is currently working on trials related to surgical site infection following vascular surgery. Matt has worked as a fellow and then collaborator on both the BASIL-2 and BASIL-3 trials since 2014. He has published extensively relating to CLTI, surgical site infection and venous disease. Matt has recently gained funding from the NIHR HTA for a large RCT designed to investigate adjuncts to prevent SSI in the groin following vascular surgery.

He is currently also an honorary consultant surgeon at The Black Country Vascular Network in The West Midlands. Prior to his current academic appointment, he completed his higher surgical training in Birmingham (West Midlands) and was funded by the NIHR in the last two years training.
